Learning how to create a cozy home is one of the best skills you can have in your interior styling toolbox. As fall and the cooler months set in, a warm, inviting home becomes all the more important. Coming home to a cozy space filled with glowy lighting, soft textures, and a few decorative touches helps your living space feel lived-in and loved. And you’ll feel like you’re returning home to a coccoon time and time again!
Luckily, a cozy home is one of those things that doesn’t require outlandish renovations or a high-end budget. It can be as simple as you like and completely personalized around the things that make you feel comfortable and “hugged” by each room. Some of my favorite ways to bring in that warmth are soft and plush blankets and pillows, gentle lighting (whether that’s through faux tapers, scented candles, or warm lamps), and small changes like a fresh rug or bath mat to bring coziness into every corner. With just a few of these edits, you’ll notice the whole space starts to shift.
To help you achieve the same, I’ve rounded up my go-to tips for creating your coziest home this season. You can turn even the most basic or sterile of rooms into ones that make you want to curl up with a warm drink and lounge around for a few hours. Whether you’re starting from scratch or just looking to add a few finishing touches, I hope these ideas help your home feel as warm and welcoming as it does in my own.
The Best Ways to Create a Cozy Home
Curating a cozy home really comes down to the details and decor, and appealing to nearly all your senses. Soft, tactile textures (like bubble throws) bring warmth, seasonal scents fill the air with a comforting fragrance, and having your favorite decorative pieces that bring you peace and calm all contribute to this kind of space. To get you started, here’s a shoppable list of some of my top picks for cozy decor.
Bring in Soft Textures

The quickest way to add coziness to any room is through a variety of textures. This could be a plush, faux fur throw, a few velvety pillows, a bouclé pouf or even a softer bath mat for underfoot. These soften the landscape of your home and create a little pockets of comfort that you can enjoy.
Think about draping throw blankets over accent chairs and couches or spread one out across your bed. Don’t forget the items in your home that have been around for longer, too. A foundational rug that’s a decade or two old might need replacing (or a little fabric spa) and replacing ratty sheets or worn-out throw pillow covers can make a world of a difference
Soften Your Lighting

Lighting can make or break the atmosphere of a room, but it’s often one of the last things we think about. It’s also worth reconsidering what bulbs, lamps, and light sources you use as the seasons change. As bright summer daylight fades, you’ll want lights that warm your space and maintain functionality. Cold-toned LED bulbs aren’t conducive for a welcoming environment, so consider bringing in warmer-toned options or skipping the big light and instead turning on floor lamps, table lamps, and other forms of mood lighting.
Outside of bulbs, I like to layer in flameless candles or one or two scented candles to cast a soft glow. String lights and sunset lights can also bring more warmth. There’s no hard and fast rule for getting your lighting right, but by replacing harsher options with ones that allow you to settle in and relax can make an enormous impact on how cozy your home feels.
Enjoy Comforting Seasonal Scents

While soft textures and lighting are key to creating a welcoming home, there is something so wonderful about walking into a home that smells cozy. Many of us love the scent of fresh cookies or other baked goods, and autumn in particular brings with it a whole array of delightful fragrances from cinnamon to pumpkin to apple to cloves.
A scented candle is the best ways of achieving this. You can opt for more classic scents or enjoy earthier notes, like leather and tobacco. A candle warmer is a great way of enjoying your favorite candles without having an open flame. If you’re sensitive to specific scents or anything too heavy, consider a few drops of essential oils in a diffuser or a simmer pot on the stove filled with seasonal ingredients you love.
Make Your Bedroom Cozier

Though every room deserves the cozy treatment, I’m partial to making sure your bedroom has this feeling above all. This is the first place you wake and the last place you spend time in before falling asleep, so it’s important to curate a space that gives you a sense of calm, and safety. To begin, I always have the ethos of starting with your bedding. For colder seasons like fall and winter, consider thick cotton or flannel and add a few extra throw blankets or pillows. An extra blanket at the foot of your bed or on the bench at the foot of your bed adds style and warmth, too.
In addition to your bedding, you can bring in a few other touches to soften the space. Think about the lighting choices on your nightstand and consider swapping your phone for a sunset/sunrise alarm clock. If you have hardwood floors, bring in a soft area rug where you get out of bed or spend time in (like in your primary bathroom or closet). A soft candle or reed diffuser can also infuse your room with a nice scent.
Swap Just One “Uncozy” Thing

This is one of my favorite tips, and it’s a great place to start if you’re feeling overwhelmed. Start in one room and just take a few minutes to walk around and notice what’s in it. Does anything feel off or out of place? Are there specific decor items or pieces that just don’t fit the cozy vibe you’d like? Make note of those things. You don’t have to change everything immediately, but it’s a great practice in understanding your space better.
Once you have this list (it may be super short or a little long!), I recommend removing at least one item that’s “uncozy” or isn’t adding to the space. You can move it to a better spot or new room or plan to donate or give it away. This little trick may seem small but it’s intentional and kickstarts the shift. As you shop around, you’ll have a better idea of what you like and what brings cozier feelings to an interior in your eyes.
Bring in Natural Touches

As a final tip, think about the natural touches you can bring into your home, even when it’s cold out. This will look different from spring and summer, but the same idea holds that natural items or nature-inspired pieces bring calm. It could look like leaves, branches, or flowers in stone vases, but it doesn’t have to be this obviously “natural” either.
Woven baskets are one of my go-to staples, and I use them under console tables or on shelves. They’re perfect for holding blankets, games, firewood, and more and bring a more lived-in feel to your living room or bedroom. Wood accents, shells, moss, clay, sand, and stone are all perfectly stylish options to think about, too, whether you incorporate a stone bowl, wood cutting board, or a few well-placed moss balls or shells on a coffee table.
