One of the most common questions I receive is “How do I style my throw pillows?”. It can seem a bit daunting when you are trying to choose from what seems like infinite pillow patterns, insert options, fabrics and sizes. So let’s dive into some simple formulas for styling throw pillows and where to find beautiful pillow options for every budget. There are so many ways you can mix and match throw pillows, but these are my go-to design tips that keep it simple!

Mix and Match
Don’t be afraid to mix different patterns, textures, and sizes when it comes to throw pillows. Combining different elements adds visual interest and depth to your space. Play with a variety of colors and patterns that complement your overall décor.
Be sure not to limit yourself to just the sofa! Place throw pillows on chairs, benches, or even on the bed to create a cohesive and inviting look throughout your space. Mix and match pillow placements to create a visually appealing arrangement.
Choosing a Pillow Insert
When you are shopping for pillows the inserts are KEY! If you buy quality inserts your pillows will look high-end even if the covers are a budget find. If you put cheap inserts in even the most expensive pillow cover they won’t look as good.
Feather pillows can have a nice luxe feel, but they aren’t always the best choice. If you are allergic to feathers, or you have concerns about how feathers are sourced, there are some really great polyester-filled pillow inserts that are just as comfy! My favorite pillow inserts are polyester-filled from Amazon.
Layering
Layering is key to creating a cozy and inviting look. Start with larger pillows at the back, then add medium-sized ones in front, and finish with smaller accent pillows. This layering technique adds dimension and creates a plush, luxurious feel. There are so many sizes of pillows to choose from, but I find myself coming back to this favorite combination for sofas every time:
The trick: Use 20″ pillows and larger (with the exception of lumbar pillows) to get that designer, high-end look.

2 x 22″ square pillows

2 x 20″ square pillows

1 x 12″x20″ lumbar pillow
Texture Play
Incorporate different textures to add depth and tactile interest. Mix smooth velvet with chunky knits, or pair a faux fur pillow with a woven one. The combination of textures adds visual and sensory appeal to your seating area. As you choose different patterns to combine, you will naturally end up with different textures. But you can pay attention to the details to make sure you add lots of variety to your mix.
The more varying textures the better. Even if you have pillows of similar colors or patterns, texture can set them apart.
For example, the floral pillow is a cotton blend, so I chose linen for the plain beige pillow. The contrasting textures add more interest than if they were both made of cotton.
Color Coordination
Consider the color scheme of your room when selecting throw pillows. Choose pillows that complement or contrast with your existing furniture and décor. You can opt for pillows that match your color palette or use them as an opportunity to introduce pops of color.
Choose a color scheme first so you can narrow down what you are searching for when you are shopping. I like to choose two colors max and mix them in with some neutrals. It’s also ok if none of your pillows match. If you want to create a very formal look you can put two matching pillows on either end of a couch. But I prefer to mix up the patterns to keep it feeling casual and comfortable.
Size Matters
Vary the sizes of your throw pillows to create visual intrigue. Combine larger square pillows with smaller rectangular or round ones. This mix of sizes adds visual interest and creates a more dynamic and inviting seating area. As a general rule, you want to buy an insert that is one size larger than your pillow cover to make sure you end up with a nice plush cushion. For example, for a 20″ square pillow you may want to try a 22″ square insert.
Remember, styling throw pillows is all about expressing your personal style and creating a comfortable and inviting space. Have fun experimenting with different combinations and arrangements to find the perfect look for your home!
